PIKEVILLE – Although the UPIKE women’s soccer didn’t end its losing streak on Wednesday, the Bears did show signs of life in a 5-0 loss to Campbellsville.
Not much went right early for the Bears, who fell behind 2-0 in the first ten minutes with goals from Lakin Walls and Molly Hall. Those two would each strike again later in the first half, along with a rebound goal by Rachel Blumfeldt to give the Tigers a 5-0 halftime lead.
However, the Bears arguably played their best half in a long time in the second half. UPIKE settled in defensively and held Campbellsville to just three shots on goal in the final 45 minutes after giving up 12 in the first half.
UPIKE also got three shots of their own on goal in that time. All three of the second-half shots came from Kate Auvil who came up from her usual defensive position to a more attacking role.
Erica Burkhardt had her fourth straight match with a save percentage above .555, stopping 10 of the 15 shots she faced.
