COLUMBIA – In a match where nothing could really get going in either direction, Warren Wilson was able to squeak out a win against UPIKE women’s soccer, 1-0 on Wednesday.
There were only a combined five shots on goal for the two teams, three for Warren Wilson and two for UPIKE, and three of those came in the first 15 minutes.
Lyndsey Jones and Kate Auvil got the two shots on goal off set pieces for UPIKE (1-7) as the teams were slowly getting settled in. Neither team had a strong scoring chance until the 89th minute when Warren Wilson’s Chloe Riess narrowly beat Erica Burkhardt on a bouncing ball in the box.
That lone goal was all that was needed to secure the teams’ fates for the night. Things got chippy late which resulted in 21 total fouls and three yellow cards but UPIKE was unable to find a clear path to the goal and was shut out for the second straight game. Susie Lusardi earned the clean sheet for the Owls.
Women’s soccer has one more match on the week, a Friday night contest against Cincinnati-Clermont scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. Friday at Bob Amos Complex.
