Wells reaches coaching milestone in Sunday win

PIKEVILLE –  While UPIKE’s 96-35 win against Ohio-Chillicothe will look like just another blowout on the schedule, it was a major milestone for the Bears’ leader as it marked coach Kelly Wells’ 300th win as a collegiate head coach.

Wells’ career record now sits at 300-121 and No. 300 came in smooth fashion.

UPIKE held the Hilltoppers scoreless for almost nine minutes and built up a 19-0 lead before OU-C got on the scoreboard. The Bears eventually built up a large enough lead to let some of the deeper bench members get extended playing time.

Brady Schmidt even entered the game late in the first half and continued his hot shooting from Saturday with a quick three and a block on Chillicothe’s buzzer-beater attempt to maintain UPIKE’s 45-10 halftime lead.

UPIKE’s starters got an extended breather in the game, as no single player was on the floor for more than 24 minutes and each player played at least seven minutes.

Every Bear to see the floor on Saturday scored, led by Damon Tobler’s 13, the first time UPIKE had accomplished that this season.
