UPIKE women’s golf starts strong at KCU event

OLIVE HILL  – The season got off to an excellent start over the weekend for UPIKE women’s golf as the Bears swept top honors at the Kentucky Christian Fall Invitational.

The team ran away with the tournament victory with a 60-over-par score in the rain-shortened 27-hole event. UPIKE ended day one with a 27 stroke lead and finished 35 strokes ahead of Oakland City to distance itself from the competition.

In addition, Boo Newsome earned her fifth individual medal with an overall 3-over-par across the 27 holes. She finished day one with a 4-over 76 that led the field by three strokes and improved from there on day two, shooting a 1-under nine holes to win by nine strokes over her teammate Adrienne Mason.

Mason show a 7-over 79 on day one with a 5-over day two to fend off Shawnee State’s Holley Hart and earn the second-place finish and all-tournament honors.

Each Bear finished in the top-10 individually. Alexis Stanbaugh finished tied for sixth with her teammate Grace Morris at 21-over, while Ashley Chaney finished just behind them in eighth with 24-over. Ashley Richmond rounded out the field for UPIKE with a T-9th 26-over.

However, Richmond may have claimed the most impressive honor over the weekend when she recorded her first career ace on the par-3 fourth, the junior’s first ever ace.
