PIKEVILLE – When a coach uses hockey style line change substitutions in basketball, one can assume the scoring would be rather balanced. UPIKE women’s basketball exemplified that to a T in its 81-49 win against Washington Adventist on Saturday.
Four different players scored in double figures, while another two were a bucket or less away, led by Emily Baker’s double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Bears didn’t light the nets on fire, but they did hold the Shock to 38 percent shooting overall in its stellar defensive outing.
Take away Alysha Berry and Christine Mabry’s combined 29 points for Washington Adventist and no other player on the team had more than nine on the team.
The Shock actually hung around with Pikeville for the most part through the first quarter, but a 21-7 second quarter put the Bears on top for good. That momentum carried into the third when UPIKE doubled up the Shock again with a 18-9 quarter.
Thanks to her sharpshooting from distance (4-6), Mary Englert, led the Bears again with 16 points. She’s now at least tied for the scoring lead in both games of her very young career.Theodora Odia (13) and (11) Mia Greatrex (11) also scored in double-figures for the Bears.
All in 10 different Bears played at least 10 minutes in arguably its most balanced and even flowing game in recent history.

UPIKE will have the week off before hosting the Appalachian Wireless Classic next weekend. UPIKE’s participation in that will begin at 4 p.m. Friday with a matchup against Point Park at the East Kentucky Expo Center.
