UPIKE football on wrong side of history

PIKEVILLE – Keiser University running back Marques Burgess scored on a fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line in overtime to lift the Seahawks to a come-from-behind 24-17 win over the University of Pikeville at Hambley Athletic Complex Thursday night

UPIKE, playing in its first of three straight Thursday night games, fell victim to Keiser, playing in its first-ever NAIA football game.

Running back Xondre Willis finished with 147 yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns on 20 carries. His six-yard run with 7 minutes, 59 seconds left to play gave the Bears a 17-10 lead. Willis added a 51-yard run with 8:48 to go in the third period for a 9-3 lead.

The Seahawks, from West Palm Beach, Fla., forced the extra period with a six-play, 61-yard drive capped by quarterback Eli Matthews 19-yard pass play to Jaylen Arlen with 1:13 remaining in regulation.

UPIKE held a slim 3-0 halftime lead on William Chandler’s 34-yard field goal with 7:19 left in the second quarter.

The Bears will host Livingstone next Thursday night.
