UPIKE FOOTBALL: Bears ready to tackle Campbellsville on Saturday

The University of Pikeville football Bears will look to even its mark at 3-3 when they invade Campbellsville’s Finley Stadium for a 2 p.m. homecoming kickoff against the Tigers.

Coach Al Holland Jr.’s  squad is coming off one of the biggest wins in road history when they knocked off Georgetown College, 37-31, marking the second straight victory over the Tigers since dropping 15 straight games.

Campbellsville, 1-5, beat the Bears, 28-14, in the last meeting back on Aug. 24, 2017. It’s the 15thmeeting all-time between the two institutions.

With the loss of senior Xondre Willis, Holland has turned to running backs Derius Gibson and Alex Sanders, along with Alexander Shelton, who came up big in the road win at Georgetown.

Gibson ran for 184 yards and two touchdowns and Sanders added 83 yards while Shelton scored on a pair of short TD runs.

UPIKE rushed for 316 yards as a team and quarterback Bowen Smith passed for 78 yards.

The Tigers are coming off a narrow loss one week ago to Thomas More (31-28). CU never led in the game.

UPIKE hopes to hand the Tigers a fourth straight homecoming game loss.
