UPIKE adds high school tennis standouts

  

PIKEVILLE – University of Pikeville head tennis coach Ben Adams announced the signing of Ashton Jones and Riley Mullins to scholarship agreements to join the Bears for the 2018-19 season on Friday.

Both will be incoming freshmen as Jones comes from Morgan County High School in West Liberty and Mullins is from Ridgeview High School in Clintwood, Va.

“I’m very excited to bring in two talented recruits who were standouts in their local competitive areas,” said Adams, who will be entering his third season in the fall. “Their triumphs on the court and in the classroom will serve UPIKE well. Ashton and Riley further solidify our competitive women’s program.”

Jones has been a member of the varsity tennis team at Morgan County since the third grade after picking up the sport at four-years old. Starting with her eighth-grade season, she has been the top seed on the team. Jones has had a pair of undefeated regular seasons and currently has just one loss and recently won the 15th Region Singles Championship. She has appeared in the KHSAA State Tennis Tournament six times, led Morgan County to a regional title, won the EKC Singles Championship and won the Rowan County Invitational Singles Championship.

Mullins recently won the Region 2D singles championship and was named player of the year. She will be the No. 1 seed coming out of the Mountain Seven Conference in the upcoming Virginia singles semifinals. Jones and her doubles partner finished as runners-up in the region while as a team, Ridgeview is advancing to the state quarterfinals.
