I had an opportunity this past week to visit Dorton, Virgie, Robinson Creek and surrounding area businesses who support Shelby Valley athletics.
One of the biggest concerns that continued to come up during conversations was the condition of the playing surface at Teco Field.
Not sure about the exact number of years the artificial turf has been in place, but one thing I do know is it was seen its better days.
The economic conditions of many eastern Kentucky towns have resulted in fewer jobs, less donations and less tax dollars for Pike County and other board of educations.
I don’t have all the answers to what needs to be done to replace the old surface with a new one.
It takes big bucks and it takes big donations. But more than anything it takes a school district and community coming together to find a solution.
The field gets more than its wear and tear with the number of sports played on it.
Sure, it’s not only a problem at Valley, but even at other schools like Belfry and Pikeville.
It was first introduced back in the 1960s and is a favorite of athletes, parents and school administrators when it comes to a playing surface.
There are many advantages when it comes to weather conditions, but also some disadvantages as well.
One thing I do know – it’s not cheep.
Belfry is taking efforts now to replace its surface. They have begun a fundraiser drive to have it in place by next season.
Pikeville High School is working to improve the facilities the Panthers call home.
It’s time folks at Valley do the same.
Until businesses and concerned parents approach the board of education to express concern over conditions, our student athletes will continue to suffer from the lack of top-notch facilities.
Action is in motion at Belfry and Pikeville for bigger and better things – its time Valley supporters and school officials get on-board!
