Seven UPIKE baseball standouts honored

PIKEVILLE – University of Pikeville baseball standouts Matt Peterson and Nelson Muniz, both infielders, have been chosen first-team All Mid-South Conference.

The announcement came during the league’s annual awards banquet held in Bowling Green on Wednesday night.

Three other UPIKE players garnered second-team selection. Those included catcher Luke Hartlage, outfielder Luke Lubiniecki and designated hitter Jay Vincent.

The five selections match the highest number in school history, which was accomplished in 2016.

Peterson led all players with a .422 batting average, including four home runs, 50 RBIs, three triples, nine doubles Muniz hit .400 with four home runs as well and 49 RBIs. He added three triples, 14 doubles and he was walked 38 times and hit five times.

Peterson and Muniz landed first and second respectively in the conference in batting average, while Peterson ranked 20th national at .422 and Muniz was tied for eighth nationally in getting on base.

Lubiniecki had a strong finish to the regular season, ending up with a .344 batting average. He added six doubles and 22 RBIs. Hartlage hit .261 with three doubles and 21 RBIs. Vincent tallied a .308 batting average with 33 RBIs, one triple and 13 doubles.

Two Golden Glove honors were handed out as well to UPIKE infielder Travis Haen and outfielder Jacob Alvardo.

UPIKE has some players honored for the fielding performances as well with third baseman Travis Haen earning his second MSC Gold Glove Award and centerfielder Jacob Alvarado earning a Gold Glove as well.

The MSC Tournament gets started on Friday morning at Bowling Green Ballpark. The sixth-seeded Bears open play against No. 3 Cumberland (Tenn.) at 4 p.m. ET. UPIKE completed the regular season with a 26-21 overall record and 7-11 mark in conference action.
