GOODY – Lexington Catholic was one big play away from taking a 10-point lead early in the final quarter and putting the final dagger in Belfry’s season.
Up stepped Isaac Dixon.
Dixon picked off Division I quarterback prospect Beau Allen’s pass two yards deep in the end zone and returned it 102 yards for a touchdown to help save Belfry’s season as the Pirates managed to hold on for dear life in the finals seconds to beat the Knights, 55-51, at CAM Stadium this past Friday night.
After Dixon’s pick six LexCath came right back and took a 51-48 lead when Allen, who passed for 451 yards and six touchdowns, tossed a 20-yard scoring pass to Brennan Emnett with four minutes, 45 seconds to play.
Belfry marched 94 yards in seven plays, the final four on a run by Brett Coleman to go back on top.
The Pirates’ defense, which was picked apart for over 700 yards, forced an incomplete pass at their 34 to seal the win as time expired.
Running back Ben Bentley had 161 yards and two rushing touchdowns on nine carries before leaving the game injured.
Dixon also rushed 14 times for 303 yards and three touchdowns as the Pirates improved to 10-2 and will face undefeated and defending state champion Boyle County (12-0) this coming Friday night at home. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
