Members of the West Virginia Board of Education voted 7-2 Wednesday to create a pilot program which will include a Class AAAA starting with the 2021 school year.
The new classification, which was proposed by the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission, will be for high school boys’ and girls’ basketball.
West Virginia high schools have been classified in AAA, AA and A prior to this new ruling.
Schools have been ranked from smallest enrollment (Class A) to higher enrollment (Class AA-AAA).
Under this pilot program, enrollment will continue to play a role. However, economic factor, like median income of each county and there location, meaning their proximity to the county seat.
