Former Johnson Central assistant and Prestonsburg High head coach Shane Simpkins has been named Pikeville High School’s head mentor to lead the baseball program.
Simpkins, a former standout at St. Catherine College and Lipscomb University, was introduced to players, parents and members of the media by PHS Athletics Director Jason Booher on Wednesday.
“I’ve excited about the opportunity to take over a program I played and coached against,” Simpkins said. “Pikeville has always been one of the top-notch baseball programs in eastern Kentucky.”
He guided Prestonsburg to the KHSAA State Baseball Tournament Elite 8 in 2013. Simpkins has won 15th Region championships in 2013, 2016 and 2017, while being a three-time All “A” Final 8 participant, along with three All “A” section and 15th region championships. His teams have won five District 58th championships and three 57th.
