Nobody saw this coming, not even Pikeville head football coach Chris McNamee.
(Their [Mingo Central’s] speed really concerned us,” he said.
Instead, it was Pikeville’s speed which proved to be the difference.
Pikeville scored 41, first-half points in a span of 18 minutes and the Panthers steamrolled to a stunning 47-7 victory over Mingo Central in the finale of the 35th annual Pike County Bowl played at Hillard Howard Field on Saturday night.
Quarterback Isaac McNamee completed 7 of 11 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns as the Panthers moved to 2-0.
Running back Cody Raines ran for 100 yards on 10 carries and a pair of touchdowns and added a third on a pass reception.
Harvard commit Jackson Hensley hauled in two touchdown passes and finished with 98 yards receiving. He also picked off one pass.
Peyton Boyd-Blair and Blake Birchfield each added an INT in the win.
Receiver Seth Pugh had two “circus” catches for 87 yards to set up a pair of scores.
Mingo Central, playing for the first time ever in the bowl, scored its lone touchdown on a 65-yard run by Drew Hatfield in the fourth quarter.
Pikeville will travel to Johnson County Friday night to face Paintsville (2-0) at 7:30 p.m., while the Miners will be at home to face Wayne (0-1) in a 7 p.m. kickoff.
