Pike Central tops Phelps in 60th title game

PHELPS – Pike Central made the most of only three hits and the Hawks captured the 60th District baseball tournament championship by holding off Phelps, 3-2, in a game played on Tuesday night.

Winning pitcher Jon Potter went the distance to toss a seven-hitter as the Hawks improved to 23-5. He stuck out seven and walked four. He allowed just one earned run, the only earned run of the tournament.

Brandon Turnmire suffered the tough-luck loss.  He struck out four and walked one as the Hornets fell to 17-9-1.

Phelps took the early lead when Payton Rife doubled down the leftfield line and scored when Scott Clevenger reached on an error by the shortstop.

The Hawks tied in the game at one apiece in the home half of the third inning when Tanner Wood reached on a bunt single and scored on a throwing error.

Central pushed it lead to 2-1 in the fifth when Brice Elkins singled to left, stole second and scored on error. Bryce Elkins had an RBI-single in the sixth to push the lead to 3-1.

Rife doubled to left in the seventh and scored on Keegan Bentley’s two-out, RBI-single to rightfield.

Both teams advance to next week’s 15th Region tournament at Johnson Central.
