PIGSKIN PREVIEW: Haywood, Pirates gear up for 2019 season

Perennial Power Belfry and legendary head football coach Philip Haywood are set to kickoff the 2019 season on the road at Southwestern on Aug. 23.

Belfry is coming off a 10-3 season one year ago, which saw the Pirates fall to Boyle County in the Class 3A regional championship game.

“We are excited about our future for this football team,” Haywood said. “We have some pretty good senior leadership returning.”

Following the season opener, the Pirates will return home to face Lexington Christian in the 35th annual Pike County Bowl at CAM Stadium on Aug. 30.

Other home games include Pikeville (Sept. 20), Magoffin County (Sept. 27), Lawrence County (Oct. 18) and Johnson Central (Nov. 1).
