Paintsville used big sixth inning to top Valley

PAINTSVILLE – Paintsville scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 2-2 tie with Shelby Valley and the Tigers advanced to the 15th Region baseball tournament semifinals with a 6-2 win in a game played Wednesday at Johnson Central.

Winning pitcher Karsten Poe worked six-plus innings, allowing only one hit while striking out seven and walked three. He replaced starter Gunner Preston with two outs in the top of the first inning.

Four of Paintsville’s seven hits were for extra bases, including a triple and double off the bat of Seth Williams. He scored and knocked home one run. Ryan Gibson doubled, singled and scored.  Matt Combs tripled and drove in two runs in the Tigers’ four-run sixth.

Samuel Brown had Valley’s lone hit.  He walked twice and scored. Hunter Mullins reached on a walk and scored. Jeremiah Prater walked and had the only RBI.

Lincoln Billiter suffered the loss as Valley’s season ended at 14-15.

Paintsville, now 23-12, will face Lawrence County in tonight’s semifinal round.
