LOUISVILLE – UPIKE men’s bowling had a strong start to its 2018-19 campaign over the weekend, taking home a win in the MSC Louisville Collegiate Classic and finishing third in the MSC Burris Memorial Classic.
Louisville Collegiate Classic
It was an exhilarating Saturday for the Bears who came out on top by a razor’s edge, beating second-place Northwestern Ohio by just four pins (7,955-7,951). The victory marked the Bears’ first since winning the Buckeye Baker Classic in January, and the team’s second consecutive win in the tournament.
UPIKE was propelled by strong performances by Jonathan Lovett and Alex Hoffman. Lovett had strong command over the lanes all day, including tossing a perfect game in his second game. He also had games of 245 and 237 to place second overall at 1,170 total pins and earned all-tournament honors.
Hoffman was steady throughout his games, with four of his five games coming in above 220. His 1,114 total pin fall was good for ninth overall and the first of his two top-10 finishes on the weekend.
The two UPIKE JV teams finished in the top-3 of their division as well, with the JV1 team winning with 7,617 total pin fall led by Brendan Ferris’ 1,152 to finish fourth overall.
Burris Memorial Classic
The momentum didn’t fully carry over across town as the Bears finished third at the MSC Thomas Burris Memorial, coming up about 250 pins short of first with a 7,109 total pin fall. Northwestern Ohio took top honors at 7,367 total pins.
UPIKE was led on Sunday by Hoffman who had three 200-plus scores out of his five games to finish in tenth. All three varsity bowlers to bowl five games – Hoffman, Ryan Bare (17th) and Lovett (47th) – finished in the top 50 out of 154 competitors.
Once again, UPIKE dominated the JV competition, with the JV1 team winning its bracket by 40 pins over Martin Methodist.
