Meet Letcher Central head coach Winston Lee

Now in his 11th season with the Cougars, having coached at different capacities. He started as the freshman coach and is now boys’ varsity basketball coach. Led Central to an 18-13 record.

A graduate of Alice Lloyd College, with a degree in Social Studies Education.

Played at ALC under coach Gary Gibson, who Lee says, “is  one of the finest men I’ve ever had the opportunity to play for and learn from on the college level.”

What is your coaching philosophy? “I’m not a disciplinarian or authoritative by any means so I try to take a more constructive approach to coaching. Passionate about making positive relationships and hopefully helping young men build character. On the basketball side, I live for defense! Try to always coach to what players are better suited for but always fall back to man-to-man. The offense changes year to year.”

What is your favorite music? Live for hip-hop/rap music. Preferably from the 90’s. I actually DJ quite a bit on the side so I also love any type of up-tempo dance-type music. Have an appreciation for all music.”

Who is your favorite artist or group? “I love Drake, but my family cookouts are always set to Hall and Oates.”

What is your favorite food? Pizza, hands down. From anywhere at any time. Las Penas of Whitesburg is a close second.

Who is your hero? “It is close call between MLK and Lincoln (I teach US history). Two guys with impossible goals that saw it through no matter the circumstance. If I had to choose a more relative and recent hero, I’d have to go Tiger! What a story of redemption!”
