High school previews: Betsy Layne

Second-year Betsy Layne head football coach Scotty McCoy had several months to evaluate his initial season at Stanville.

His Bobcats managed just a single win in 2017, beating Jenkins in the season finale. It was a team had could have easily won four games.

“I came in here and these guys wasn’t sure what to expect out of me as a coach and the same for me with the players,” McCoy said as he prepared his team for the opener on Aug. 17 at Sheldon Clark. We were a play of two away in several games of turning those loses into wins.”

Betsy Layne will compete in Class 2A this season before reclassifying to 1A next fall.

Senior running back Quintin Adkins said bringing respectability back to the program is his main objective.

“We have worked really hard during the offseason to prepare ourselves for the upcoming season,” he said. “It’s time for us to make this community and school proud to be associated with Betsy Layne football.”

The Bobcats home opener will take place on Aug. 24 against Floyd Central. Other home games include Shelby Valley (Sept. 21); Leslie County (Oct. 5); Casey County (Oct. 12); and Jenkins (Oct. 26.

Other road games are set for East Carter (Aug. 31); Magoffin County (Sept. 7); East Ridge (Sept. 28); and Prestonsburg (Oct. 19).

McCoy said the schedule will be challenging for his team, but coaches and players are ready to tackle it.
