Four scholarships given to area tennis standouts

Students from throughout the 14th, 15th and 16th regions have benefited from the annual Kenny Huffman Memorial Tennis Foundation (KHMTF).

The foundation has announced this year’s four, $1,000-scholarship recipients, including twin brothers, Noah and Nick McNamee from Belfry High School. The two were presented their funds by KHMTF President Jim Vanover during the school’s award ceremony.

Both will attend Transylvania University on academic scholarships and will play varsity tennis.

The remaining two recipients are Morgan County’s Ashton Jones and East Carter’s McKenzie Hayes. Jones will attend the University of Pikeville on an academic and tennis scholarship while Hayes will further her education at Eastern Kentucky University, majoring in mathematics.

This year’s 45th annual tournament will be held July 27-29 at Bob Amos Park. Anyone interested in participating, volunteering or donating, please visit kenhuffclass.org. Entry deadline is July 24.

The tournament’s namesake is Kenneth Warren Huffman, who was a member of the Pikeville College tennis team. He passed away from terminally ill cancer at age 28.

The foundation has awarded $15,000 in scholarships over the past three years.
