Johnson Central back among state’s elite

Johnson Central running back Joe Jackson was injured last year in the opening game of the 2017 high school football season against West Virginia power Capital.

The prize back missed the remainder of his junior season for the Golden Eagles, who went on to reach the Class 4A championship game against eventual champion Franklin-Simpson.

He helped Johnson Central win its first-ever title during his sophomore year in 2016. He rushed for 85 yards and three scores in the win. He was untouchable throughout the post season.

“Joe is a special back,” JC head coach Jim Matney said. “We lost him early in the season one year ago and now he’s back for his senior year.”

Jackson was a dominant force for the Golden Eagles during the team’s 14-1 title run. He rushed for 2,134 yards and scored 34 touchdowns.

Those numbers have not gone unnoticed across the Commonwealth. His name is being tossed around as a Mr. Football candidate, arguably the best back in the mountains.

“He has worked extremely hard to get back on the field,” Matney added. “Joe is a big part of this team and we can’t wait to have him back out there.”

All the burden isn’t squarely on his shoulders, though. Devin Johnson stepped in following Jackson’s injury and played well. Quarterback Ryley Preece is a threat as well. And, there are plenty of others.

“We have depth in the skill positions,” Matney said. “The target is on Joe’s back and we know that. Other guys have got to help us make plays and we feel like they will.”
