HS FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Golden Eagles cruise past Lafayette

Johnson Central went on the road to open its season and the Golden Eagles left Lexington with a 49-12 victory over Class 6A Lafayette in a game played Friday night.

Five different running backs scored for the Golden Eagles, including Bryce Tackett who reached the endzone twice. He finished with 39 yards on seven rushes.

Running back Dillon Preston rushed eight times for 87 yards and one score to lead the ground attack which amassed 317 yards. Ethan Reynolds, Devin Johnson and Cody Rice all rushed for one score.

Quarterback Ryley Preece completed five of  seven passes for 97 yards and Grant Rice completed his only attempt for 17 yards. Zach Russell had two catches for 52 yards.

Johnson Central will visit Capital, W.Va. (0-0) this Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Laidley Field in Charleston.

Magoffin County used a balanced rushing attack to pull away and beat Knott County Central, 51-22, in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.

Running back Jaylon McDuffus led the way with 118 yards rushing on eight attempts. Zach  Conley followed with 90 yards on six carries and one score. Fernando Irvin and Caleb Howard added a rushing touchdown each.

Quarterback Nick Caldwell passed for 54 yards and a 35-yard touchdown pass to Brad Standifur. Placekicker Buddy Collins added a field goal.

Mason Lovely led the defensive surge with 19 tackles, including 13 solo.

Magoffin County will return to action Friday night at The Rock against Martin County (1-0).

Jenkins……….…8

Breathitt County built a 33-0 halftime lead against Jenkins and went on to beat the Cavaliers, 39-8, in the season opener from Tommy Brush Field on Friday night.

The Cavaliers took the field with only 10 players dressed. Both schools agreed to play eight-on-eight to avoid Jenkins having to forfeit the game.

Jenkins’ points came in the closing minute of play at Hayden Fleming rushed in a touchdown and then added the two-point conversion.

The Cavaliers will return to action Friday night at home as they host Rye Cove, Va. (0-0). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
