Pikeville senior wide receiver Seth Pugh hauled in a 32-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Isaac McNamee with 8 minutes, 34 seconds remaining, and placekicker Tanner Hamilton booted the extra point to lift the Panthers to a stunning 22-21 victory over the Belfry Pirates before a standing-room-only crowd at CAM Stadium on Friday night.
It marked Pikeville’s first win over Belfry since a 29-20 win at Hillard Howard Field in 2014, and first ever at CAM.
Pugh’s 14-yard TD catch with 3:36 to play in the third period pulled the Panthers, now 5-0, to within 21-15.
Belfry, now 2-2, built a 21-8 lead on the opening possession of the second half on Peyton Hensley’s one-yard plunge with 8:36 remaining in the third period.
The Pirates had two chances late, but the Panthers forced a fumble recovered by Nate Collins, his second of the game, and Connor Wright’s interception with just over one minute left iced the win.
Pikeville will journey to Lawrence County (2-2) while Belfry will host Magoffin County (2-2), 7:30 p.m., Sept. 27.
