HS FOOTBALL: Luncheon kicks off Pike County Bowl events

Coaches from all eight of this year’s Pike County Bowl participants were on hand Thursday for the annual luncheon held at Appalachian Wireless Arena.

The luncheon kicked off what should be an exciting weekend Aug. 30-31 at Belfry’s CAM Stadium and Hillard  Howard Field.

Next Friday’s opening night will feature the East Ridge Warriors against Phelps at 6:35 p.m., followed by Belfry against Lexington Christian Academy at approximately 8:35 p.m.

Action shifts to Hillard Howard Field Saturday night as Pike County Central and Shelby Valley clash at 6:35 p.m. The Wildcats slipped past the Hawks, 43-35 last year in overtime.

The finale will have the much-anticipate matchup between the host Pikeville Panthers and Mingo Central at 8:35 p.m.

“The Pike County Bowl has really grown into something special,” PHS head coach Chris McNamee said.

Mingo Central head coach Josh Sammons said being part of the bowl is something his program has wanted for a long time.

“We’re excited,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for our kids to be part of this.”

Saturday night will also include the crowning of Pike County Bowl queen and  recognition of the 2019 Legends Award winner Delano Thomas.

Tickets are now on sale at all participating schools. More than $883,000 has been given back to the county’s six high schools.
