HS BASKETBALL: Paintsville, Lawrence get big wins

PAINTSVILLE – Paintsville took the lead away from Raceland in the final period and held off for a 53-51 victory in a game played Feb. 11.

Seth Williams hit for 12 points, including seven in the final quarter as the Tigers improved to 17-5. Brady Dingess and Colby Fugate followed with eight apiece and Nick Keeton chipped in seven.

LOUISA – Lawrence County exploded for 31 points  in the first period and then held on down the stretch to beat Russell, 77-69, in a game played at the Dawg House Feb. 11.

Cody Maynard poured in a game-high 29 points as the Bulldogs moved to 21-7. Tyler Maynard finished with 25 and  Noah Fairchild tossed in 10.

STANVILLE – Phelps stormed back in the final period to stun Betsy Layne, 55-43, in a game played at Junior Newsome Arena Feb. 11.

The Hornets, now 12-13, outscored the Bobcats (12-15) by an 18-4 margin to turn the game around.

Dominick Francis paced the Hornet with 18 points while Trey Francis added 12.

Betsy Layne’s Jordan Frazier led all scorers with a game-high 25 points.

STANTON – Letcher Central landed three players in double-figure scoring as the Cougars slipped past host Powell County, 56-52.

Trevor Hardin finished with 12 as Central improved to 17-9. Greg Kincer tallied 11 and Tyler Boggs chipped in 10. Caleb Stidham hit for seven.
