HS BASKETBALL: JC, Valley sweep tourney foes

PRESTONSBURG – Johnson Central built a commanding lead early on against Pike County Central and cruised to a 61-24 win in the final round of the Hi-Tech Signs/Graphix Holiday Classic played at Prestonsburg Fieldhouse Dec. 22.

Jacob Rice tossed in a game-high 16 points to lead the Golden Eagles, now 7-1. Cory VanHoose followed with 14 and Isaiah May chipped in 11.

DaSean Penn and Noah Atkins scored six apiece for the Hawks, who dropped to 7-4.

CHAPMANVILLE – Chapmanville Regional took the lead with 29 seconds remaining and held on to beat Fairmont Senior, 49-46, in the championship game of the CRHS Holiday Tournament played Dec. 22.

It was a rematch of the 2018 state title game between the two unbeaten powers.

Phillip Mullins poured in 17 points to lead the top-ranked Tigers, now 6-0. Andrew Shull chipped in nine.

PRESTONSBURG – Shelby Valley nearly saw a 27-point lead get away before the Wildcats were able to hold off Perry County Central, 78-71, in the second round of the Hi-Tech Signs/Graphix Holiday Classic played at Prestonsburg Fieldhouse Dec. 21.

Cody Potter was unstoppable, firing in a game-high 42 points as the Wildcats moved to 7-0. Orbie McPeek followed with 10. Zack Johnson chipped in eight.

The two teams combined to score 54 points in the final period.
