HS BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Tolsia out slugs Phelps; Tigers fall

PHELPS – Phelps erased a 10-run deficit against Tolsia only to have the Rebels rally to score five times in the seventh to down the Hornets, 15-11, in the nightcap of games played at Carl Biliter Field April 6.

Riley Dotson had four hits and drove in three runs for the Hornets, who dropped to 6-6.

In the opener, the Hornets scored eight times in the bottom of the third inning to beat Mingo Central, 10-0.

Winning pitcher Brandon Turnmire had three hits and drove home a pair of runs while Seth Elkins added two hits and knocked in two runs .Riley Dotson batted in two runs. Garrett Clevenger collected two hits.

Daylin Goad took the loss for Mingo Central, which dropped to 3-10.

LEXINGTON – Paintsville pounded out 17 hits, including a pair of home runs off the bat of Seth Williams as the Tigers hammered Frederick Douglass, 16-8, in a game played April 6.

Williams also added a single, scored three runs and knocked in four as the Tigers moved to 8-5.

Ryan Gibson had two singles drove in three and scored once while winning pitcher Braxton Ratliff doubled, singled twice, scored twice and knocked in one run.

Jake Hyden had three hits, batted in two and scored while Gunner Collins doubled, singled, scored three runs and added an RBI. Ashton Adams had two hits, scored two runs and knocked home two runs.

LEXINGTON – Paintsville’s seventh-inning rally came up short as West Carter escaped the Tigers, 9-8, in a game played at Frederick Douglass April 6.

Seth Williams had two hits, including a home run, scored twice and knocked in a pair of runs as the Tigers dropped to 7-5. Gunner Collins singled twice, walked three times, scored and drove in two runs while Matt Baldwin singled, walked three times and drove in two runs.

Baron Ratliff was the losing pitcher.

In game two, winning pitcher Dylan Fitch had a pair of doubles and drove in a pair of runs while Jonathan Fitch doubled and knocked in four runs. Dawson Fraley added an RBI.

Mason Gordon had two hits, including a double and batted in four runs in the opener. Dawson Jude added doubled, singled, scored two runs and knocked home a pair of runs while Will Lafferty singled, scored twice drove in two more.

Winning pitcher Daylon Stafford collected three hits and scored two runs.

PHELPS – Phelps’ Garrett Clevenger worked a complete game on the mound and the Hornets built an early lead and went on to beat Floyd Central, 7-3, in a game played at Carl Biliter Field April 5.

Clevenger struck out eight and scattered six hits as Phelps improved to 5-5.

Catcher Jordan Blankenship had a pair of singles, scored and drove in two runs. Outfielder Brandon Turnmire doubled and scored twice.

Floyd Central outfielder Blake Slone blasted a solo home run. Shortstop Matt Combs, catcher Logan Conley and first baseman Noah Marcum all singled and scored.

Losing pitcher Brayden Hamilton had a pair of singles.

GOODY – Montgomery County scored the eventual game-winning run on a pass ball in the top of the eighth inning to beat Belfry, 5-3, in a game played at Massey Energy Field April 5.

Belfry, now 8-3, had tied the game at 3-all in the home sixth inning on Chandler Fluty’s RBI double. Logan Windle singled home Belfry’s first run in the third.

WINFIELD – Mingo Central struggled offensively and Winfield broke open a one-run game late to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Miners, winning 11-2, in the nightcap.

The Generals pushed across eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to send the Miners to 3-9- overall. The Miners fell 10-0 in game one.

Andrew Allen had two hits while Lance Lester and Tyler Ooten each drove in one run.

Gage Chambers took the loss in game two.

In the opener, Daylin Goad had the only hit of the game for Mingo Central. Ashton Deskins suffered the loss.
