HS BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Belfry nips Phelps; Valley tops Wave

GOODY – Belfry Sean Cochran raced home with the game-winning run following a fielding error in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Pirates past Phelps, 4-3, in a game played at Massey Energy Field April 23.

Phelps,  now 8-13, had tied the game at 3-all in the top of the frame on Caleb Dotson’s sacrifice fly, scoring losing pitcher Brandon Turnmire.

Austin Fields doubled home one run and Cochran singled home another as the Pirates improved to 12-5.

Kaleb Taylor was the winning pitcher.

PAINTSVILLE – Johnson Central’s Hunter McCloud blasted a home run, doubled and drove in four runs to lead the Golden Eagles to a 16-2 victory over cross-town rival Paintsville in a game played April 23.

He also scored three times as Johnson Central improved to a region-best 21-1. The Golden Eagles winning streak is now at 17 games.

Chayse Meade added three hits, including a double, and knocked home four runs while Grant Davis had two hits, scored and knocked in two runs. Weston May collected four hits and batted in two runs while scoring twice.

Ryley Preece was the winning pitcher.

Gunner Collins doubled and drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers, now 14-8. Gunner Preston was tagged with the loss.

Braydon Hamilton finished with three hits, including a double, drove in three runs and scored as the Jaguars improved to 10-8. Noah Marcum singled home two runs while Caleb Hager added three hits, one a double, and scored.

Brayden Slone drove home the only run for the Blackcats, now 2-11. Graham Burchett was tagged with the loss.
