HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER: P’burg, JC girls cruise in openers

Prestonsburg and Johnson Central opened the 2019 high school soccer season with impressive road wins Monday night.

The Lady Blackcats cruised to a 10-0 victory over Letcher Central at Cougar Field while the Lady Eagles rolled past Shelby Valley at Teco Field, 10-0.

Prestonsburg’s Makayla Ousley scored five goals and assisted on another while Anna Burchett finished with three goals and three assists. Elizabeth Burchett added two goals and two assists.

Goalkeeper Chelsea Samons was outstanding between the pipes.

Johnson Central goalkeepers Madison Hicks and Chloe Dyer combined to shutout the Lady Cats. Lauren Johnson led the way for JC with four goals while Lexie Scarberry knocked in two. Haley Lykins had one goal and assisted on three others.

Cleo Wells and Lakin Bentley each added one goal and one assist while Hicks capped the scoring with a goal.

In boys action Monday, Prestonsburg took an early lead on Letcher Central and went on to score an 8-0 victory.

Matt Burchett had three goals and two assists while Isaiah Collins added two goals. Grant Justice finished with one goal and one assist and Preston Crase and Max Jervis each scored.

Goalkeeper Jacob Martin recorded the shutout.

Tuesday’s schedule has Hazard at Belfry for a 6 p.m. boys’ match-up at Massey Energy Field while Pikeville girls host Prestonsburg at Bob Amos Soccer Complex at 6 p.m.
