For the first time in more than 20 years there will be a new head football coach leading the Prestonsburg Blackcats in 2018.
Newly-hired head coach Brandon Brewer comes to Prestonsburg from Powell County and says the transition period has been smooth.
“It’s going great,” he said. “These kids here know how to work hard and how to compete.”
The Blackcats are coming off a 7-5 season in 2017. P’burg reach the Class 2A playoffs, falling in the second round to Lexington Christian.
Brewer will have several new faces on the field but eyes the challenge.
“I have a good feeling about the kids we have,” he said. “Sure, there is pressure to win and coming to a school like this it should be that way.”
He will count on a trio of seniors – Ezekiel Briggs, Blake Slone and Jason Ratliff.
“Leadership is easy,” he added. “If you come to practice, work hard and encourage your teammates that a quality that leads to success.”
The Blackcats will open the season at North Laurel on Aug. 24, the first of three straight on the road.
The first home game comes against Floyd Central on Sept. 14. Others include Shelby Valley (Oct. 5); Betsy Layne (Oct. 19); and Perry Central (Oct. 26).
Remaining road games include Lawrence County (Aug. 31); Breathitt County (Sept. 7); Hazard (Sept. 21); Leslie County (Sept. 28); and East Ridge (Oct. 12).
“We are excited about the challenges ahead and look forward to getting started,” Brewer said.
