High school previews: Phelps Hornets

It’s simply one game at a time for Phelps.

Phelps head coach David Jones enters his third season guiding the boys of Hornetsville.

He said the program continues to grow in numbers, thanks in part to off-season conditioning and commitment from those wanting to play.

“This is probably the most players we’ve had here in early July,” Jones said. “Our coaching staff is excited about getting on the field.”

The Hornets finished 5-5 one year ago, losing a heartbreaker in the Class 1A playoffs to Lynn Camp (32-26).

Senior running back Brandon Turnmire says his team must focus each week and not look ahead.

“It’s all about taking it one game at a time,” he said. “We know that getting back into the post-season field will take work.”

Senior quarterback Garrett Clevenger echoed success doesn’t come without hard work.

“You have to be willing to give, listen and learn,” he said. “If we do what we are capable of doing it should be a fun year.”

Phelps will kick off its season in the Pike County Bowl at Belfry against East Ridge on Aug. 24.

The Hornets will play in their home opener on Aug. 31 against Sheldon Clark. Other home games include Fairview (Sept. 28); Hazard (Oct. 5); and Pikeville (Oct. 12).

Other road games include matchups with Jackson County (Sept. 7); Tug Valley (Sept. 14); Jenkins (Oct. 19); and Frankfort (Oct. 26).
