Pikeville’s success on the football field begins long before the Panthers reach the high school level.
Pikeville Little League football volunteer Kevin McAnallen has volunteered his time to help young players develop the skills it takes to compete for a state championship.
He was recently honored by the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame as Blanton Collier Sportsman’s Group Volunteer of the Year.
McAnallen said the award for a great honor, but said he loves teaching and coaching the younger player.
He was honored during the banquet which also recognized former area players Kash Daniel, Daric Pugh and Xondre Willis.
Pikeville head coach Chris McNamee was among those who honored McAnallen for his recognition.
He said once he left the stage he was then greeted by legendary Belfry head coach Philip Haywood, Kentucky’s winningest high school football coach.
McAnallen said being greeted by Coach Haywood meant the world to him.
When he’s not busy working with young players, you’ll find him refereeing high school sports, such as football, baseball and basketball.
He said seeing players on all levels succeed is his biggest reward, regardless of their school.
