Mingo Central’s passing attack was grounded on the slippery and cold grass at H.B. Thomas Field on Friday night.
Quarterback Daylin Goad, who had tied the game with a short TD run, ran 17 yards for the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter to lift the Miners to a come-from-behind 13-7 win over host Shady Spring in the Class AA playoff matchup.
The Miners, now 9-2, survived three, first-half turnovers and was able to keep the game tied at 7-all at the break after blocking a 35-yard field goal attempt.
Shady quarterback Drew Clark tossed a screen pass to Erick Bevil who raced 62 yards with just under five minutes left in the third period to push the Tigers up 7-0.
Goad scored on a five-yard run and added the PAT kick to knot the score. He finished with 190 yards on 21 carries.
Mingo Central advances to the quarterfinals for the third time in four seasons and will face Bridgeport (10-1) on the road this coming Saturday. The Indians eliminated Lewis County on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
