The University of Pikeville has announced nine members and one team will be inducted into the Hall of Fame for the Class of 2019.
Inductees include the 2005 Pikeville College football team, Joshua “Scotty” Samarco and Vance Cooksey (men’s basketball), Anson Cunningham (football), Jeff Jones (baseball), Krista Kourns (softball) and Tracy Miller (bowling).
Honorary inductees include Brad Marcum, Kenny Schmidt and Chris Smith.
The event will be held Oct. 26 in the 7th floor ballroom of the HPE building as part of homecoming weekend.
ARCHERY
Team claims national runner-up, 13 medals
University of Pikeville archery finished second as a team in the USA Archery 3D Collegiate National championships
The runner-up finish is the best in the program’s three-year history.
A.J. Clements won gold in the men’s recurve and Dustin Eldridge took gold in the men’s barebow.
The rest of the medals came from team events including the Bears sweeping the recurve team events. Tori Gayheart, Elizabeth Jones, and Brooke Hamilton took home gold in women’s recurve; while Devin Gayheart, Zach Johnson, and Clements combined to take gold in the men’s side.
UPIKE’s other two golds came from Katie Karr and Eldridge in the mixed barebow team event and from Anna Scarbrough, Catelynn McKnight, and Jones winning the women’s mixed equipment event.
Pikeville also claimed three silver medals, all three as teams. The women’s bowhunter team of McKnight, Lauren Burgess, and Brooke Fannin, the men’s mixed equipment team of Dylan Turley, Ethan Francis and Clements, and the mixed recurve team of Clements and Jones earned the three silvers for UPIKE.
Four total individuals or teams also earned bronze medals to round out the podium stand for the Bears. Karr took home bronze in women’s barebow as the last individual medal for Pikeville. Turley and Scarbrough (mixed compound), Karr, Kayla Snyder and Kendra Cannon (women’s barebow team), and Andrew Blackburn, Dustin Eldridge, and Jacob Suffridge (men’s barebow team) each earned bronze as well.
BOWLING
Women takes home two team titles
University of Pikeville took home the most team medals possible during the opening weekend in Louisville.
Lauren Piotrowski started the season with an individual win with a 1076 total pinfall and a 258 high-game. Jessica Wolfe was not far behind in fourth with a 1002 total pinfall and 246 high game. Stephanie Crider led the JV Bears with a 998 total pinfall in the five individual games, finishing sixth and just three pins away from all-tournament honors.
Men pick up top-five finishes
University of Pikeville men opened the season with a pair of top-five finishers in the Louisville Collegiate Classic this past weekend.
Dustin Yocum finished third overall with a 1106 total pinfall to lead all Bears. He bowled back-to-back games of 247 and 231 to help propel him to the all-tournament team.
For the varsity squad, UPIKE had three bowlers finish in the top 20 in Alex Hoffman (ninth), Jonathan Lovett (18th), and Paul Sacks (19th).
