HS FOOTBALL: Young QB, late pick carry Tigers

Paintsville’s defense came up with a big interception late in the game and the Tigers held on to hand Union (Va.) its first loss this season in six games, winning 21-14 at Big Stone Gap, Va.

Jonah Porter had the game-winning pick at the three-yard run as the Tigers improved to 4-2. It was his second of the game.

Quarterback “AJ” Allen, making just his second start in place of injured Jake Hyden, tossed a pair of touchdowns and scored on a one-yard run in the final quarter to put Paintsville ahead for good 21-14.

Harris Phelps hauled in a 68-yard touchdown reception and Karsten Poe added a 20-yard TD pass play.

Paintsville will journey to Fairview (2-3) on Oct. 11. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
