HS FOOTBALL: Martin County era begins with big road win

Martin County football ran out to a 22-6 lead after one quarter and the Cardinals went on to beat Betsy Layne, 56-12, in the season opener played at Bobcat Stadium on Friday night.

Running back Kolby Sparks rushed 10 times for 215 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Cardinals built the lead to 41-12 at the break.

Branson Smith added 58 yards on four rushes and a touchdown while Logan Proctor carried seven times for 75 yards and two scores. He also rushed for a pair of two-point conversions.

Quarterback Drake Muncy’s only carry resulted in a one-yard touchdown. He also tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass.

Betsy Layne quarterback Chase Mims completed 9 of 16 passes for 113 yards and a pair of touchdowns and backup Chase Hamilton added 73 yards through the air. Mims was picked off three times and Hamilton once.

Receiver Nicholas Howell caught both touchdown passes. He had four catches for 126 yards.

Both teams are back in action this Friday night as the Cardinals will host Magoffin County (1-0) at The Rock while the Bobcats welcome Morgan County (1-0).
