HS FOOTBALL: Big Red D roughs up Warriors

Belfry’s defense was rock solid from start to finish and running back Isaac Dixon ran for 150 yards on 10 carries and three scores as the Pirates went on the road to Southwestern and beat the Warriors, 31-7, in the season opener played Friday night.

The defense limited Southwestern to just 123 yards total as the Pirates have now won all four meetings with the Warriors, having previously won in 1997, 2013-24.

Belfry finished with 331 yards, all on the ground and playing without starting quarterback Brett Coleman.

Dixon scored on runs of 86 and 30 yards and returned a punt 65 yards for another score.

Running back Ben Bentley had 86 yards on the ground and added a 69-yard TD run. Peyton Hensley added 59 yards rushing on nine attempts.

Grayson Cook converted on four PAT kicks and booted a 29-yard field in the first period to open the scoring.

It marked the first time Southwestern had lost a season opener since 2013.

The Pirates return home to CAM Stadium to host Lexington Christian (1-0) in the 35th annual Pike County Bowl on Aug. 30. Kickoff is tentatively scheduled for 8:35 p.m.
