Floyd Central has been tabbed as the No. 1-ranked girls volleyball team entering the 2019 season in the Mountain Top Sports’ pre-season poll released Monday.
Coach Darlene Moore’s Lady Jaguars finished this past season 28-7, losing to Paintsville in the 15th Region championship game. Floyd Central opens it season at home against Letcher County Central on Aug. 20.
Coach Jason Clark and the Pikeville Lady Panthers claim the No. 2 spot following a 31-8 season one year ago. Pikeville was eliminated in the 15th Region tourney by the Lady Tigers. Pikeville opens it season at home against Betsy Layne on Aug. 22.
Defending champion Paintsville and Pike County Central share the No. 3 position. Coach Dawn Kinner’s Lady Tigers finished 35-4 one year ago, losing in the opening round of the sate tournament. Coach Suzanne Preece’s Lady Hawks were 17-14 in 2018. Paintsville opens against Betsy Layne while the Lady Hawks host Shelby Valley. Both games are Aug. 19.
East Ridge, which finished 25-11 last year, claims the No. 5 position. Coach David Spadlin’s squad will open at home on Aug. 19 against Prestonsburg.
Rounding out the poll are Martin County at No. 6, followed by Belfry. Coach Jordyn Harless’ Lady Cardinals were 19-11 in 2018 while the Lady Pirates finished 12-11 under coach Bethany Tackett. Belfry will host Martin County on Aug. 20.
