HS SOFTBALL: Defending champs open with home win

PIKEVILLE – Defending 15th Region champion Pikeville made the most of eight hits to defeat Grundy, Va., 4-1, in the season opener played at Myers Field March 18.

Winning pitcher Emily Ford struck out 15 batters and scattered three hits while holding the Lady Wave to  just a single run.

Kendal Hall had a pair of hits and drove in two runs while Randi Delong added  one hit and knocked home one run.

At Pikeville

LOUISA – Johnson Central took a four-run lead in the top of the eighth inning and held off Lawrence County in the bottom of the frame to escape with a 10-9, extra inning win March 18.

Chloe Lafferty had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Lady Eagles while Kaitlyn Fitch drove home three runs. Chloe VanHoose had three hits in the win.

Lawrence County’s Abby Fletcher drove home four runs.

BUCKLEYS CREEK – Pike County Central pushed across 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat Shelby Valley, 13-3, in the season opener played at the Hawks Nest March 18.

Bailey Birchfield had the hot bat for the Lady Hawks with three hits, three runs scored and four RBIs. Winning pitcher Kayleigh Thomas scored one run and knocked home two while Sydney Lowe added one hit and scored three runs. Skylar Stumbo had three hits and Abby Huffman had  one hit and scored twice.

Shelby Valley was led by Tori Hampton’s two hits. She scored once and knocked in three runs. Taylor Newsome had a pair of hits and batted in two runs.

Paige Maynard had three hits and drove in four runs as the Lady Cardinals rolled in the season opener. Terri Howard collected two hits and drove in three runs along with winning pitcher Gracie Presley.

CROSS LANES – Tug Valley’s Autumn Hall tossed a no-hitter as the Lady Panthers defeated Cross Lanes  Christian, 10-0, in a game played March 14.

She struck out 13 batters in the season opener and had two hits, including a double and scored a pair of runs. Abigail Spence had two hits and score while Caylee Akers had one hit, scored and drove in one run.

Brooklynn Farley doubled while Alyssa Newsome and Courtney Wellman each had one hit and both scored a pair of runs.
