LEXINGTON – The mountain was simply too high to climb for Pikeville Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Panthers, playing in the girls’ Sweet 16 for the first time since 1980, fell behind by 15 points in the opening half and Barren County went on to eliminate Pikeville, 65-47, in the opening round played at Rupp Arena.
Pikeville, which saw its season end at 27-8, was led by Kelsey Jo Tackett’s 14 points. Kirsten Cole-Williamson followed with 13 while Trinity Rowe tallied nine and Alivia Gearheart tossed in eight.
Barren County, now 32-4, was led by Elizabeth Bertram’s game-high 21 points.

LEXINGTON – Boyd County fell behind early on and Louisville Male sprinted away to score a 74-56 victory in the girls’ Sweet 16 opening round played at Rupp Arena Thursday afternoon.
Savannah Wheeler led the Lady Lions (28-5) with a game-high 28 points and Harley Paynter followed with 16.
Male, now 23-7, was paced by Maya Crimes’ 19 points.
