SWEET 16: Warren Central, Mad’ville advance

LEXINGTON – Warren Central and Madisonville-North Hopkins punched their tickets to the boys’ Sweet 16 semifinals with opening round wins scored at Rupp Arena Thursday night.

The Dragons pulled away in the final quarter to eliminate Mayfield, 73-55 while the Maroons slipped past Lincoln County, 57-49.

Warren Central was led by Dre Boyd’s 18 points while Tayshaun Bibb tossed in 15 and Aiyontre Pillow added 13 as the Dragons moved to 21-11.

Carson Guthrie and Kent Trey Matthews led Mayfield (25-8) with 12 each. Guthrie finished with a double-double, adding 13 rebounds.

Kenny White fired in a game-high 21 points for MNH, now 30-5. Ksuan Casey followed with 11.

Jaxon Smith finished with 19 for the Patriots, who finished 23-13.
