Jones named new Bourbon County head coach

Former Phelps High School head football coach David Jones has been named the new head mentor at Bourbon County High School.

Jones made the announcement on Thursday he will take over the Colonels program. Bourbon County finished 3-8 this past season, losing in the Class 4A playoffs to state runner-up Johnson Central.

He said he looks forward to taking over the program and beginning the next chapter in his coaching career. Jones replaces John Hodge, who was head coach from 2012 until this past season.

Hodge took Bourbon County to the Class 3A state semifinals in back-to-back season in 2012-13, losing both games to eventual champion Belfry, where Jones served as an assistant under coach Philip Haywood.

Hodge was 57-32 as head coach at Bourbon County.

Jones was 14-16 in three seasons at Phelps, finishing 5-5 the past two years and earning back-to-back playoff berths for the Hornets.

He said the choice to leave Phelps was a difficult one for him to make but is excited about the challenges ahead.
