HS BASKETBALL: Belfry, Pikeville win; Valley falls

GOODY – Belfry was able to hold off a furious East Ridge rally in the final four minutes to escape with a 59-55 win in the final game played on the first day of the 44th annual Mountain Schoolboy Classic Dec. 27.

Avery Browning tossed in a game-high 19 points, including a clutch free throw with 4.4 seconds left to seal the win. Brett Coleman followed with 13 and Dezmon Roblee chipped in 10 as the Pirates (2-6) ended a six-game losing streak.

Dalton Wellman paced the Warriors, now 4-5, with 17 points and Cameron Hess added 14.

GOODY – Pikeville used a balanced scoring attack to run away from Hart County, 79-47, in the opening round of the Mountain Schoolboy Classic played at Belfry High School Dec. 27.

Connor Roberts led the Panthers, now 6-2, with 16 points, to share game-high honors. Kyle Watkins added 13 and Riley Sammons tossed in 10. Christian Billiter added nine.

GOODY – Shelby Valley managed to score just 19 points in the second half as Bourbon County pulled away for a 61-47 victory in the opening round of the Mountain Schoolboy Classic played at Belfry High School Dec. 27.

The Wildcats suffered their first loss this season in nine games while the Colonels improved to 7-5.

Cody Potter poured in a game-high 29 points to lead Valley, including a half-court, three-point goal as time expired in the first half to give the Wildcats a 28-27 lead at the break.

Jordan Frazier continued his solid play for the Bobcats, now 5-4, with 19 points. Zack Bentley followed with 10 and Brady Robinson tossed in nine.

GOODY – Phelps saw a fourth-quarter lead slip away down the stretch and Magoffin County rallied to beat the Hornets in overtime, 61-59, in the first game of the Mountain Schoolboy Classic played at Belfry High School Dec. 27.

Jason Casey led the Hornets (3-3) with 18 points and Trey Francis followed with 16. Seth Mayhorn added eight.

Phelps took a 13-point lead into the second half but was held to only 15 points.
