WILMORE – UPIKE women’s basketball was able to get back in the win column on Tuesday with a big 75-48 rout of Asbury on the road.
The Bears outscored the Eagles 30-12 in the second quarter to create the insurmountable lead relatively early.
Most of that scoring came from a 15-0 run by the Bears towards the beginning of the period. Two of the highest-scoring Bears did a modest part of the damage in the run, including Kayla Mullins who got the run started and Mia Greatrex.
Mullins scored a game-high 17 points, going 6-10 from the field, 15 of which came in the first half. She also grabbed eight rebounds in the game. Meanwhile, Greatrex scored 12 and only missed one shot in the entire game.
By the end of the half, UPIKE had doubled up Asbury 49-24. The Bear defense held the Eagles to just 28.1 percent shooting in that time.
The UPIKE offense cooled off in the second half, but the defense kept Asbury locked down as the Eagles scored only another 24 points after halftime as the Bears cruised to the victory.
Pikeville outrebounded Asbury 49-34, and a good chunk of that credit goes to Brianna Burbridge who pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Mary Englert also made a trip of three-pointers en route to scoring 11 points.
Every active player for Pikeville saw at least four minutes on the floor and the Bears saw some contributions from the deeper end of the bench including Shelbi Knauer’s five points.
