Area coaches, players earn state honors

The Kentucky Football Coaches Association has named its district coaches and players of the year for all six classes.

Belfry head coach Philip Haywood, Shelby Valley’s Anthony Hampton, Phelps’ David Jones and Johnson Central’s Jim Matney have garnered honors.

Haywood was chosen as Class 3A, District 6 coach while quarterback Avery Browning was selected as player of the year. Haywood’s team will play this coming Friday night in the regional championship game against defending champion Boyle County.

Hampton, who guided the Wildcats to a 10-2 season, was named Class 2A, District 8 coach while running back Seth Johnson was tabbed as the top player.

Jones, who guided the Hornets to a 5-5 record, was Class 1A, District 8 coach while Pikeville senior quarterback Connor Roberts was chosen as the district’s top player. Roberts and Pikeville will play Williamsburg this Friday night in the regional championship game.

Matney was selected as Class 4A, District 8 coach while running back Joe Jackson was tabbed as player of the year. The Golden Eagles will face Ashland-Blazer at Eagle Field Friday night in the regional championship game.
