SMYRNA, Tenn. – UPIKE women’s bowling shook off a slow start to have a dominant win in the 40-game MSC Collegiate Baker Classic on Sunday, while the men’s side was near the peak of the mountain all tournament but couldn’t climb to the top and finished third.
Women’s
UPIKE got off to a very uncharacteristic slow start, bowling a 138 which put the Bears in 10th place out of 14 teams. That then lit a fire under the team when they bowled eight straight games of 175 pins or more, including three 200-plus games.
In the 14th of the 40 games, UPIKE bowled a tournament-high 270. At the end of the first day UPIKE held a 255-pin lead over Union. The Bears coasted from there and held that lead for the rest of the tournament, eventually winning by 257 pins over Martin Methodist.
The win is UPIKE’s first of the 2018-19 season as a team.
Men’s
Like the women’s team, the men’s team got off to a slow start but rebounded later. Unfortunately, their rebound didn’t get them to the top. After the first day, UPIKE was only 35 pins from first place Emmanuel College.
The Bears stayed in third place throughout the second day as well but couldn’t close the gap between them and second place Martin Methodist, eventually finishing 150 pins back from first.
UP NEXT
Both the men’s and women’s teams will travel south next weekend to Marietta, Ga. to take part in the Brunswick Southern tournament on Nov. 3-4.
