PIKEVILLE – UPIKE men’s soccer fell just short of picking up its second conference win of the season on Wednesday when it dropped a 2-1, double-overtime decision to Campbellsville.
The first 55 minutes were not fun for Bears fans as the Tigers took an early lead on a goal from Nathan Heath in the seventh minute. From that point on, UPIKE only mustered one shot until Eric Bernabue drew a foul in the box and converted his penalty kick to draw the Bears level 1-1.
That goal gave the Bears momentum to hang around with the Tigers for the rest of regulation. The bend, but don’t break defense of UPIKE stuck around through the first half of overtime; but, the second half provided more fireworks than either side would’ve liked.
Halfway through the second bonus period, a hard Tigers tackle turned into an altercation that saw both Campbellsville’s Charlie Lambert and UPIKE’s Eric Bernabue get sent off. Campbellsville then took a man advantage when Andres Alvarez was also sent off a couple minutes later.
The Tigers used that advantage to net the game-winning golden goal in the 108th minute from Troy Walters.
