Stellar second day, Newsome’s individual win, guide Bears

WEST PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – After holding a narrow lead after day one, UPIKE women’s golf turned it up a notch on Sunday to win the Shawnee State Invitational by 37 strokes in the final tournament of the fall season.

Boo Newsome shot a tournament-best 74 on Sunday to close a four-stroke gap between her and Georgetown’s Baylee Salyers and Newsome’s teammate Alexis Stambaugh. Newsome’s four-stroke win (+12) is her second this week after winning the Washington & Jefferson Rossin Memorial Invite on Monday.

Stambaugh still earned all-tournament honors with her third-place finish at 17-over, while Adriane Mason joined her on the all-tournament team in fourth place with 19-over 163.

A pair of Bears finished just short of all-tournament honors as Ashley Chaney and Peyton Morris finished tied for sixth at 21-over, one stroke shy of Georgetown’s Mary Catherine Borders who finished fifth. Ashley Richmond finished tied for ninth at 27-over to round out the UPIKE competitors.

The team and individual win give UPIKE three wins as a team and three individual wins heading into the season winter break.
