Men’s soccer win streak snapped at Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURGFor the first time in almost a month, UPIKE men’s soccer didn’t walk off the pitch with a win, losing to Cumberlands (Ky.) 2-0 on Saturday.

The Patriots took control of the game early as Marvin van der Made scored both of the UC goals within the first 11 minutes.

Reigning MSC Defensive Player of the Week Anibal Navarro settled in after those two goals, stopping the next seven shots to the final whistle

Besides that, the two teams were fairly level for the first 25 minutes before Rze Culbreath was sent off with a red card, limiting UPIKE to 10 men for the remainder of the match.

From that point on, UC dominated possession and held the Bears without a shot for the rest of the match.

Women’s soccer loses to Cumberlands

The struggles continued for UPIKE women’s soccer on Saturday as they dropped a 3-0 decision to Cumberlands (Ky.) on the road.

Cumberlands dominated the match from start to finish, launching 45 shots – 22 on frame – while holding the Bears to zero.

Despite the high volume of shots, UPIKE kept Cumberlands off the board for the first half hour before a pair of goals from Alanna Skinner and Hannah Truckenmiller gave the Patriots a 2-0 halftime lead.

Sara Randez scored shortly after the start of the second half for UC’s third goal.

Even though UC scored three times, Bears keeper Erica Burkhardt still had a strong performance, stopping a career-high 19 shots.
